Appleby Flood Risk Management Scheme
What we are doing:
The Environment Agency is currently installing a new pumping station to deal with excess flows of water in the Doomgate culvert.
Why it is happening:
During wet weather, areas of Doomgate, Chapel Street and Holme Street can experience flooding as a result of the Doomgate culvert becoming gravity locked during high flows on the River Eden. A new pumping station in Broadclose Car Park will help alleviate this problem and reduce flood risk. When completed, the scheme will better protect 64 properties and infrastructure from flooding, including road access to homes and businesses.
When it is happening:
To minimise disruption, the Environment Agency are working to complete the scheme within the 20-month schedule, avoiding as many peak holiday and tourism periods as possible. The construction work on the scheme is due to be completed in 2026.
For more information regarding these works please call the Environment Agency helpline on 03708 506 506 quoting the job reference ‘Appleby FRMS’ or email ApplebyFRMS@environment-agency.gov.uk.
